Developing a QuickTime Musical Instrument

Q We're planning to develop a QuickTime musical instrument using our own Music sound (not Roland). Is it acceptable to develop a new Extension instead of a QuickTime instrument? What information and tools are available from Apple to help us develop a QuickTime instrument and/or a new extension?

A For now, the APIs which would allow you to develop your own music-instrument components are not open, and they will probably not become available until the next release of QuickTime after version 2.0.

We have one sample code called "Embedded Instruments," which embeds the instrument sound into the QuickTime movie. It ought to provide you with some kind of alternative. See also: How To Write a MusicComponent Based on the Generic Component by David Van Brink, Apple's QuickTime Music Architect, for more information on how to build music instruments.
