This document is a Mac OS X manual page. Manual pages are a command-line technology for providing documentation. You can view these manual pages locally using the man(1) command. These manual pages come from many different sources, and thus, have a variety of writing styles.

This manual page is associated with Mac OS X Server. It is not available on standard Mac OS X (client) installations.

For more information about the manual page format, see the manual page for manpages(5).

hwmond(8) BSD System Manager's Manual hwmond(8)

NAME
hwmond -- Mac OS X Server Hardware monitoring daemon

SYNOPSIS
     hwmond [ -h | -t ] [ -s seconds ]

DESCRIPTION
hwmond is short for HardWare MONitoring Daemon which, in its current form, executes on the Xserve plat-form platform
form running Mac OS X Server. hwmond runs in the background periodically collecting various informa-tion information
tion about the current state of the hardware.

OPTIONS
     The following options are available:

-h Print usage summary and exit.

-s Specify the number of seconds for polling period (polled info).

-t Determine if we run on this machine and exit. (TRUE/FALSE)

USAGE
In typical usage, hwmond is launched during the boot process by the launchd(8) user-daemon. Upon
launch, hwmond moves to the background, reads its configuration file and waits to be activated by a
timer setup to fire at a predetermined, or -s, number of seconds. hwmond will then log relevant infor-mation information
mation in the file var/log/hwmond.log, and optionally send an email using sendmail.

The information currently collected by hwmond is parsed, organized and stored in a CFDictionary main-tained maintained
tained in memory. This dictionary is retrieved by the servermgr_xserve plugin that is part of the
     server manager architechure.

hwmond is most useful when used in conjuction with the "Server Monitor" application. This application
provides a GUI to display the retrieved CFDictionary and is also used to configure the hwmond file
     /etc/hwmond.conf.

Finally, the hand-edited plist /etc/hwmond.SMART contains a list of storage devices and resulting SMART
errors that hwmond will log and report. If a particular storage device is not listed in this file,
generic SMART errors will be logged.

FILES & FOLDERS
     /usr/sbin/hwmond
     /etc/hwmond.conf
     /etc/hwmond.SMART
     /var/log/hwmond.log
