External Features

The iMac family of computers are housed in two-tone plastic enclosures that include the display. The separate keyboard and mouse are also designed in two-tone plastic.

The top of the enclosure includes a built-in handle for carrying the computer. The handle can also be used to secure the computer using a cable and lock.

The bottom of the enclosure has a hinged support that can be used to change the tilt angle of the front of the computer from about 11 degrees to about 17 degrees.

The front of the enclosure is dominated by the 15-inch display. The front also includes, below the display, the following features:

• CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive slot, in the center

• Stereo speakers, one on either side

• Two headphone jacks, next to the speaker on the left side

• Power button, green when on, pulsing amber in Sleep mode, located near the speaker on the right side

The receptacle for the power cord is located on the back. The connector for an external video monitor is located on the underside of the back.

The right side of the enclosure, as viewed from the front, contains the I/O panel. The I/O panel contains the following features:

• Sound input and output jacks

• Two FireWire ports (on some configurations)

• Modem connector

• Ethernet port

• Two USB ports

• Programmer's buttons: reset and NMI

The back portion of the bottom of the enclosure has a hinged plastic door that can be opened for access to the expansion RAM and the AirPort Card slot. For more information, see RAM Expansion Slots.
