MIDI, an acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is a serial data protocol and a related family of file formats. The MIDI protocol consists of time-stamped events, which can include note on/off commands, controller commands (such as sustain pedals and aftertouch), and system-exclusive data. MIDI data can be converted into sound by hardware or software synthesizers. It can also be used to control a wide range of devices ranging from audio mixer and effects unit automation to remotely triggered lighting hardware.
